Level Playing Field have received the following press release from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club regarding their plans for International Persons with Disabilities Day tomorrow.
Tomorrow is International Persons with Disabilities Day, celebrated around the world every year on December 3 to promote inclusivity for people with disabilities or impairments across the globe as one of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
At half-time during tomorrow’s match, we will hear about how the Club engages with fans and local residents with disabilities or impairments- from striving to improve the matchday experience home and away, to providing opportunities in sport, education and employment through the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.
We work closely alongside the Tottenham Hotspur Disabled Supporters’ Association (THDSA) in planning and delivering accessible facilities, ticketing and travel – we continue to be the only Premier League Club to have an access liaison steward travel to all away games with our disabled access fans.
In doing so, our specially trained access stewards ensure that our fans have a fantastic experience not just at the Lane but in and around the different stadia in the Premier League and Europe.
Within our local community, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has a proven track record of providing life changing opportunities for people with disabilities and impairments.
Through its innovative projects, the Foundation is able to engage with approximately 350 disabled people on a weekly basis through sports and physical activity, education and employability programmes.
Two years ago, a Disability Centre of Excellence in partnership with Barnet and Southgate College was launched, designed to provide specialist education facilities dedicated to the specific needs of students with complex learning and physical disabilities. With the aim of making a life-changing difference to 200 students each year, the facilities help develop vital communication, independent living and work skills to provide students the best chance of becoming economically active in their future life.
The Foundation has been able to provide a range of programmes and activities within the Centre including: specialised PE sessions, life skills workshops, employability and work placement projects, sensory room and rebound therapy sessions, blind and partially sighted fitness and multi sports activities along with bespoke independent living activities.
Throughout the past year, the Foundation has focused on providing new opportunities for people with learning disabilities gaining access to employment, including three new projects supporting around 35 young people to experience work placements across Foundation programmes and with external organisations.
