Level Playing Field (LPF) have been alerted to the content of a tweet posted yesterday (4th July) by Billericay Town FC owner and Manager Glenn Tamplin, which LPF believes trivialises and mocks the very serious issue of mental health.
Level Playing Field Chair, Tony Taylor said: ”Level Playing Field are disappointed that the owner of a football club, with the responsibility that this brings, feels it appropriate to post something that reinforces negative stereotypes of those who are affected by mental ill health.
That the message was used with official club branding shows the level of forethought that went into this post which at best is in seriously poor taste.
We hope and anticipate that the relevant football authorities will examine this derogatory message and take appropriate action”.
1 in 4 people will be affected by mental ill health at some point in their lives and Level Playing Field is committed to challenging prejudice and working to end the stigma surrounding mental ill health.
In 2015, we signed up to the Sport and Recreation Alliance Mental Health Charter for Sport which sets out how sport can use its collective power to tackle mental ill health and the stigma that surrounds it.
