Warfare to Welfare - Military to Mobility

Submitted on Thursday 6 October 2011 by Elaine Browne

When American Marc Buoniconti received serious spinal cord injuries in a football accident 16 years ago, he set out on a mission to raise money to design a new car for wheelchair users.

Until now, disabled Americans who use wheelchairs had to rely on public transportation or expensive vehicle conversions. Since his accident, Marc has raised money for spinal injury research and over the last few years, helped design a new car for wheelchair users.
He recently took delivery of the MV-1, made by the same company who produce military Hummers at its Indiana plant.

Marc’s new MV-1has a 3-foot-high door that is wide enough to allow a person in a wheelchair to use the built-in ramp to get in unassisted.
So, that set us thinking…..given that the government is so intent on cutbacks, including the military, perhaps they could find a new use for all those surplus Challenger tanks as mobility vehicles?
Let’s face it, parking would be a lot easier and more versatile - and there would be less likelihood of the blue badge parking bays being abused. And parking on match days would be far less problematic!
Perhaps your local supermarket parking bays could soon look like this:

We can’t find the Challenger tank on the Mobility vehicle list as yet, but we will keep an eye out for you!
