Construction work on public transport links to and from Olympic Park has been completed more than a year before the start of the London 2012 Games, according to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).
Work has finished at the main ‘gateway’ station for the Games, Stratford Station, which will act as the transport hub for visitors to Olympic Park. The newly completed Docklands Light Railway extension from Stratford International Station will open to the public this summer and Transport for London (TfL) is on track to complete a Jubilee line signalling upgrade in July on the London Underground.
The upgrades will open up 10 different rail routes through Stratford station during and after the London 2012 Games. “Working together with TfL, Network Rail and others we have delivered a positive transport legacy for London a year before the Games,” said ODA chief executive Dennis Hone.
“New trains, improved services and upgrades to infrastructure such as at Stratford station, the main gateway station to the Games, will mean spectators can get to and from venues in 2012 and will leave east London better connected for decades afterwards,” Hone added. About US$10.6 million is being spent on the UK’s transport infrastructure ahead of the Olympics.
